It can’t hurt; and if he was seeing someone, maybe you can find her name and phone number. ” After everyone left, I cleaned up the kitchen. Fran had offered to help, but I insisted that she and her mom needed to get Connie home. Which was true, but I was also eager to be out from under Carol’s suspicious glare. What did she have against me? Was she afraid I’d discover something damaging or unsavory about Fred that would cast an even darker shadow over his death? While I thought Fran’s suggestion of Fred moonlighting to earn extra money was logical, the thought of him driving all the way to Haysi to do it was not.

She tapped Fred’s name into the computer before directing me to the ICU waiting area. The halls were lined with potted peace lilies. I spotted the door with the sign reading “Chapel” and considered going in to say a prayer for Fred. The chapel would be an excellent place to hide while I steeled myself to actually go and see him.  . especially if it was Fred’s family. I took a deep breath and went on to the ICU waiting room. A nurse approached and quietly asked who I was there to see. I told her, and she led me back to a cramped room where Fred lay hooked up to a number of beeping, whirring, whooshing gadgets.

I knew there hadn’t been any love lost between Mr. Franklin and Fred—Mr. Franklin had once spoken to me about how difficult Fred had become after his accident and how he couldn’t fire him and risk a lawsuit—but this brusque behavior was inexcusable. I made a mental note to ask Fran if she knew or could find out why Fred went to Haysi so often and why Mr. Franklin was acting so cold. Could he have been harboring a grudge against Fred that went deeper than Fred’s mood swings after the car accident?
